Kansas City’s Winter Wonderland

With his thick fur coat, Casey rejoices as he runs through the 10 inch of newly fallen snow, only briefly impeding our snow removal efforts.  Later that day we had an additional two inches of snow.

Businesses, churches, banks and government agencies closed.  We dug out of the first snow and wham, Monday evening the snows began again.  Terry and I measured another 7 inches of snow on top of the original snow that had “compressed” but not melted.

Churches, businesses, government agencies and banks closed again, or limited their hours/personnel.

As Kansas City again dug out of the snow, there was lots of opportunity to walk through our neighborhood to really experience the beauty of the snow.

View From My Window

Oh, how I envy Meg’s California vistas.  The ocean, the rocks and the shore.  I haven’t even mentioned the vineyards.

But late last week I was reminded that Kansas City also has some great views.  When my co-worker encouraged me to look out my office window I was surprised and delighted with the simple beauty of the late afternoon skyline.  Hope you like these photographs “from my window”.

These pictures are taken facing West from the Jackson County Courthouse.  They were taken at about 5:00 p.m. as the sun was setting.  The combination of the rich color of the sky, combined with the lights from the city structures are a simple reminder of the loveliness of city life.

Even within the course of a few minutes, the colors of the sky changed dramatically.

Enjoy, and have a great weekend.

All That Jazz Kansas City Style

Kansas City is known for jazz. While not the birthplace of the music, it would be fair to say that jazz “grew up” here, and has become a part of Kansas City’s cultural identity.  It is not surprising, then, that it is performed in bars, nightclubs and the local parks.

Kansas City Parks and Recreation’s free jazz concert at the Rose Garden late last summer was just my cup of tea.  Mike White, former Jackson County Executive and a prominent Kansas City attorney, is also a jazz musician.  When Mike wants to play, there is always a crowd anxious to hear him!  People brought chairs, blankets and picnics to the concert and made a night of it.  Listening to the sounds of jazz while hanging out with neighbors and friends on a perfect summer night is just hard to beat.

Did you miss the concert in 2012?  Maybe you should get it on your calendar for 2013.  It is a great way to spend an evening.

Amigoni: An Urban Winery

What happens when Leawood, Ks. home owners discovers a passion for wine?  Well, usually they would build a wine cellar and fill it with great wines.  But not Michael and Kerry Amigoni.  They began growing grapes in his back yard.  Eventually they bought land in Centerview, Missouri, just 45 minutes East of Kansas City to grow more and better grapes.  Mike selects traditional French grapes which are grafted on  vines that are sturdy enough to withstand Missouri’s extreme temperatures.

But they don’t stop there.  After they grow and harvest the grapes, they turn them into wine.  Amazingly good wine by Missouri standards.  But the Amigionis didn’t stop there.  They restored a building in the bottoms across from the Livestock Exchange Building, and opened an urban winery.

The building is now inviting and offers Amigoni wines, Boulevard beers and Roasterie coffees. There is even a “barrel room” stocked with wines aging in Missouri made oak barrels.

When Terry was the successful bidder on a wine tasting at Amigioni’s, we had never heard of the place.  But, we found it at 1505 Gennessee, in the Bottoms.  We visited on a cold weekend afternoon.  It was a great experience. The owners are gracious and accommodating.

As a friend of mine would say: “Definitely a repeat!”

This Is For You, Bill

A friend told me he likes our posts that feature Kansas City.  I love my city, and love taking pictures of wonderful places throughout the metro area.  Here are three photographs of the downtown Kansas City skyline.

Have a great weekend.

Open For Business: Truman Road

My visits to my dad involved a trip across town from Kansas City to Independence.  While my routes vary a lot, I often drive on Truman Road.  It is just wonderfully urban.

I particularly love this corner store East of downtown on Truman Road.  The storefront is covered with cartoon characters.  I never could figure out the name of the store, but it appears that it sells hats, CD’s and “skull candy”?  Seriously.  I don’t know.  The owners came outside to see what I was doing, but seemed pleased that I considered their art worthy of attention.

These gentlemen were hard at work.  They appeared to be having fun as they worked. When they saw me, they waved and let me take their photographs. their work stopped for a moment.  They were in a good mood and so was I.

Wall Art: Kansas City’s Historic Midland Theater

Searching for Kansas City’s best outdoor art is one of the joys of my weekends.  This mural in Kansas City Mid-town features the Midland Theater.  Located at 1228 Main, it is a celebrated historic building that has, through the years, offered a venue for motion pictures, plays, events and, best of all, many local and national jazz legends.

More Wall Art from Kansas City’s East Side

Meg and I agree we have a lot to celebrate.  Today I want to celebrate and share more of Kansas City’s graffiti.  My weekly adventures often provide we opportunities to find new murals throughout our urban community.  These paintings were found just barely Southeast of downtown.  The artist or artists plying their trade on this freshly painted wall obviously love color.  There were at least half a dozen individual paintings extending from one building well into the alley just East of Grand within a 7 minute walk to our center city.

“Feminines” is almost certainly the artist’s signature on this wonderful rendition of a mythical bird.

While renditions of death are very unusual on wall art, this skull seems to smile from the wall.

The shocking pink on this final mural adds to the festive nature of this block in Kansas City.

Live in a city?  Hope you enjoy the wall art where ever your route takes you.  It is, in the best sense, the people’s art.

It’s Show Time

Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts is an architectural marvel.  Located in the heart of Kansas City, at 16th and Broadway, it is named for Muriel Kauffman, whose vision made the center possible. Mrs. Kauffman selected architect Moshe Safdie to design the building. A world renown cultural center, it is home to the Kansas City area’s premier performing arts organizations featuring theater, opera, ballet, the symphony and, our personal favorite, the Independence Messiah Choir.

Beautiful in day-light, its elegance is even more fully experienced when the building lights up the sky.
